Naphthenic Acid Number (NAN) Analysis

Along with our analysis of Total Acid Number (TAN), IPL has the capability to analyse for Naphthenic Acid Number (NAN).NAN relates to the organic acids present in crude oils. The determination of NAN is an important parameter for the petroleum industry as it allows for the evaluation of corrosive properties prior to their processing of the crude oils.

Naphthenic Acids, are carboxylic acids, naturally occurring in crude oil, and contribute to the Total Acidity. Naphthenic acids are known to cause corrosion in Refinery Distillation units, particularly between 230ºC and 400ºC. They are also responsible for causing desalting issues, and increasing heat stable salts hence the importance of testing for NAN.
