As an oil trader, part of your responsibility is to market and sell the crude extracted from a field or well to refineries using similar crude characteristics as feedstock. Since some refineries are able to deal with heavier or lighter crudes, matching the crude composition to the refineries processing abilities, enables them to maximise their production efficiency. 

Crude Oil Assays are very useful for providing information on a crude’s quality and composition. The composition of a crude sample gives an indication of the types of petroleum products that will be obtained from the refined product. 

Oil traders will often rely on crude oil assay data to help them find an appropriate market for a crude.
